Programme Standards | Accreditation

The programmes follow the framework of model courses from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and have been approved by the Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA), the governing body in The Bahamas under the IMO and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Additionally, LM Maritime Academy is registered under the Ministry of Education Science and Technology.

Our Academic Programmes

Cadet Officers Training

LJM Maritime Academy offers three (3) year programmes in two options leading to the award of a Diploma in Nautical Science or Marine Engineering.

At the end of the Diploma studies, cadets will sit examinations through the Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) for certification as an Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (STCW regulation Il/1) or Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (STCW regulation I/1).

Entry Requirements

  • Bahamian citizenship
  • 17 – 35 years of age
  • Minimum of 3 BGCSE subjects, including;
    Mathematics, English and Physics or Combined Science
  • Clean Police Record
  • Pass a physical fitness test
  • Pass a drug test and health screening analysis
  • Pass a Psychomotor Skills test
  • Pass an interview screening

Rating Training

Spread over four (4) months, our approved Ratings programme aims to develop professional skills and impart knowledge, to those who will become part of navigational or engineering watch in a support capacity. At the end of the training, students will pass out with certification as either:

• Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) - STCW A-Il / 4, 5M
• Engine Room Watch Rating (EWR) - STCW A-111/4, 5

Entry Requirements

  • Bahamian citizenship
  • 17 – 35 years of age
  • Clean Police Record
  • Be drug, including alcohol, free
  • Pass an interview screening
  • Pass a physical fitness test
  • Pass a psychomotor skills test
